MUS TECH 259-0 Introduction to Music Technology (1
unit)
Survey of music software and hardware for the professional
musician. Topics include music notation, sequencing
and MIDI, audio recording and editing, synthesis,
multimedia, and web publishing. Assignments include
projects demonstrating the practical use of software
tools. Prerequisite: None.
MUS TECH 262-0 Technology in the Music Classroom (1)
Survey of music software and hardware in the context
of teaching. Topics include computer-aided instruction,
music notation, sequencing and MIDI, multimedia,
and web publishing. Assignments include projects
related to teaching music. Prerequisite: None.
MUS TECH 320-0 Physics of Sound (1)
Principles of physical acoustics. Acoustics of musical
instruments, the human voice, and concert halls.
Fundamentals of psychoacoustics. Prerequisite: None.
MUS TECH 321-0 Producing in the Virtual Studio (1)
Strategies for writing, recording, and producing music
in the context of an integrated MIDI/digital audio
production environment. Topics will include MIDI
data entry, recording live sound sources, editing,
plugins, mixing, mastering, generating MP3s, mixing
for picture. Assignments include creative projects
and listening/discussion of relevant "popular" and "art" music.
Prerequisites: MUS_TECH 259-0, MUS_TECH 262-0 or
equivalent experience; permission of instructor.

MUS_TECH 337-0 Multimedia for the Web (1)
Advanced instruction in web design and site maintenance
with a focus on the design of multimedia intended
for distribution via the Internet. Content will be
generated using a mixture of graphical user interfaces
and object oriented scripting languages. Prerequisites:
MUS_TECH 259-0, MUS_TECH 262-0 or equivalent experience.
MUS TECH 338 Programming (1)
First quarter: Syntax of programming language, program
development, user interfaces, and music-specific
algorithms. Second quarter: Techniques for creating
musical applications; music-specific algorithms and
programming techniques, music and sound representation.
Prerequisites: MUS_TECH 259-0, MUS_TECH 262-0 or
equivalent experience.
MUS TECH 340-0 Composing with Computers (1)
Foundational techniques of composition using music
and audio software. Topics include techniques of
algorithmic composition, real-time interaction, sound
processing, and analysis of electroacoustic music.
Assignments include student compositions. Prerequisites:
MUS_TECH 259-0, MUS_TECH 262-0 or equivalent experience.
MUS TECH 342-0 Computer Sound Synthesis (1)
Simulation of musical instruments, the voice, room
acoustics; digital filtering, effects processing;
digital recording, mixing, editing. Prerequisites:
MUS_TECH 259-0, MUS_TECH 264-0 or equivalent experience.
MUS TECH 343-0 Sound Design for New Media (1)
Creative projects for the Web and DVD. Authoring of
sonically rich Websites using Flash. Creation of
DVDs which integrate 5.1 surround sound and image.
Discussion of exemplar sites, non-linear sound design
concepts, surround mixing techniques. Prerequisites:
Ability to use an audio program for soundfile creation/mixing.
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

Individual instruction in projects related to music
technology. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
MUS TECH 345-0 Technology-Based Performance (1)
The creation, rehearsal and performance of technology-based
music in an ensemble setting. Focus on real-time
interaction, technological performance interfaces,
application of chance and algorithmic methods. Prerequisite:
permission of instructor.
MUS TECH 348-0 3-D Sound and Spatial Audio (1)
Techniques and applications of 3-D sound and spatial
audio. Topics include the physical acoustics and
psychoacoustics of spatial hearing, simulating 3-D
cues, stereo sound reproduction, multichannel audio
formats, environmental acoustics and environmental
simulation, computer-human interfaces, and virtual
reality applications. Prerequisites: fundamental
knowledge of acoustics.

Independent project in music technology. Prerequisite:
permission of department.
MUS_TECH 393 Technology Colloquium (0/0.5)
Issues and topics in technology. Presentations by students
and guest speakers. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

MUS TECH 434-0 Computers, Technology, and Music Experience
Introduction to resources for musicians, including
performers, teachers, and scholars. Advanced computer
software and hardware in a hands-on, project-oriented
environment; custom design for multimedia and Internet.

MUS TECH 441-0 Advanced Computer Composition (1)
Advanced techniques of algorithmic composition using
music and audio software. Topics include stochastic
methods, pattern-based models, and interactive techniques.
Assignments include extended student compositions.
Prerequisite: MUS TECH 340.
MUS TECH 442-0 History and Analysis of Electroacoustic
Music (1)
From the musique concrete and electronic music of the
1950’s through today’s acousmatic and computer
music. Topics include sound objects, spectral morphology,
acoustic representations, perception-based analysis,
and sound symbology. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

(1)
Individual instruction in projects related to music
technology. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
MUS TECH 450-0 Advanced Audio Signal Processing (1)
Techniques for digital-signal processing of audio signals
with an emphasis on software design and implementation.
Topics include equalization filtering, audio compression, “effects” processing
such as flanging and chorusing, spectral display,
the fast Fourier transform, fast convolution, reverberation
simulation, and wave guide-based physical modeling
algorithms. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
